Baseball taught me how to lose

This is a rare sports post from me. My whole life, well since I was around 6 years old I’ve been a huge football (soccer) fan. As such I am used to my team playing once a week, occasionally more. Sometimes they lose and you know what? It sucks! Losing on a Saturday can ruin your weekend and the majority of the following week. I know it shouldn’t and that letting a game I had no control over dictate my mood is stupid but hey, that’s fandom for you. I think it also helps that my team are usually pretty good and so the losing hasn’t always been as frequent for me as for some.

A couple of years ago I started watching baseball as well. I learned the ins and outs of the game and even picked a team to support. Got myself a hat too. There are so many games. My team seems to be always playing. It’s hard to keep up with time zones etc but I do my best. Part of them playing that amount of games is that losing happens way more frequently. Rotations, injuries and just good ol’ probability means that my baseball team loses way more games that I’m used to and it’s made me better at watching sports. I wouldn’t say I don’t mind losing but it doesn’t ruin my day/week like it used to. I just appreciate the game for what it was (easier some times than others) and move on. Besides, there’s probably another game tomorrow.

I’ve managed to take that attitude into my other sports watching and though it’s not always so easy, it’s made dealing with losses much smoother. So thanks baseball, you’ve made me a better loser?
