My favourite albums of every year I’ve been alive - 1990
Well after some discussion over on Mastodon about our favourite albums of each year, tying in the with the Albums of the year as chosen by users of the Fediverse series of post I do, a few people have decided to do a list of their favourite albums from every year they’ve been alive. Some people have taken it further and decided to do a full list for each year. I have decided that I simply must join in on this and so here we are.
There’s no set amount for each year. No strict top 10 etc. Some years will have more than others, it simply depends. It also goes without saying that for a lot of these early years, these are albums I’ve came to a lot later in life. I wasn’t jamming out to death metal when I was a year old, as much as I’d like to claim I was.
And so we begin, with the year I was spawned. 1990. So here are my favourite albums released that year:
We have to start with one of my favourite albums by one of my favourite bands of all time. We’re talking Painkiller by Judas Priest. I have two music related tattoos and Judas Priest are one of them, as is their importance. There’s not much that needs to be said on this album. It’s just pure heavy metal magnificence. From the opening drum intro onwards it has me captivated.
And so it turns out one of my other all time favourite bands released an album in this year too. Death’s Spiritual Healing is low down on my list of favourite Death albums but I like all their albums more than most bands output, and thus a lower tier Death album is still better than other bands best. To me at least. Besides that art work is so evocative.
Sticking with death metal to the next two releases and with good reason. Some classics of the genre were released this year. Maybe that’s why I’m drawn to it so much. Next up is Left Hand Path by Entombed. Another all timer and one of the first records I bought in vinyl as soon as I was able to start collecting. Death n’ Roll baby!
Another death metal classic coming in next. I saw Obituary live in the last couple of years and they were great. The new stuff sounded fantastic but when they ripped out tracks like ‘Chopped in Half’ and ‘Body Bag’ the show went to another level. One of the finest albums from the Florida scene.
Staying in metal for now, we’re moving over to the thrash side of things. Rust in Peace by Megadeth is possibly my favourite thrash album of all time. Okay, I’ve thought about it and it’s not but it still puts up a good fight! The riffs. The riffs. The riffs. That’s all that needs to be said about this classic.
Hey it turns out another of my favourite bands released an album this year and it also happens to be my personal favourite from their catalogue. Harmony Corruption by Napalm Death would get a place in hall of fame of extreme music if it were up to me (and it should be). They’re the band I’ve saw live most I think, although The Prodigy might be level, and this album was key to me getting into them. That reminds me I need to dig out my Harmony Corruption long sleeve.
Well the theme of favourite albums by bands I love continues with Slayer. Seasons in the Abyss isn’t the all out attack of Reign in Blood but as far as I’m concerned it is truly their finest hour. SSSSLLLAAAYYYERRR. Ahem. Sorry. What an album though.
Last up is a bit of a weird one but it’s an album I absolutely loved as a kid. We’re talking The Simpsons Sing the Blues. I was a kid in the 90s so obviously I was obsessed with The Simpsons. I have a feeling that this album might have been the reason my parents got me a discman so I’d stop playing out it loud. I have no idea how it holds up but the songs are still etched into my memory.
And there are my favourite albums from 1990. Until next time.
Hails!
